Elam” 18th Virginia Infantry, WIA at Gettysburg during Pickett’s Charge, and taken POW at Sailor’s Creek, 1p. quarto, Johnson’s Island, Ohio, May 25, 1865, in part: “...I’m still here & no visible prospects of getting away. Boys all well & send double portion of love in return...” Fine...plus; Autograph Letter Signed “Sallie E. Andrews”, 3p. octavo, written to President Andrew Johnson on behalf of Elam, it reads in part: “...Again I am involved in trouble (though of a different nature) & remembering your promise to me at N_ last fall, I have ventured without any trepidation whatever to call upon you now & ask your clemency in behalf of one, who is in a very destitute & suffering condition, a prisoner at ‘Johnson Island.’...He is one of Genl Lee’s Army & was captured just six days previous to his surrender...I write to ask a favor I feel you cannot in your benevolent heart, refuse me, The young man spoken of is one, Lieut Wm. R. Elam of the 18th Va. Reg. Genl. Hunters Brig. Genl Picketts Division & if you will do the kindness ot have the oath administered...” About VG. Elam was given the oath and released in mid June 1865. (2 items)
