Autograph Letter Signed, “W.J. Estell” 5th Alabama Infantry, 2p. octavo, pencil, Camp Rodes, February 15, 1865, and reads in part: “...We were relieved from picket on duty on Monday. Four men deserted from our brigade while on pickett but oneon from the 5th. Nine Tar Heels (NC) deserted from our post in one night on our right. You say you are opposed to arming the negroes well I am just ‘teeth and toe nails’ for it. I say let us make a ‘Spoon or Spill a Horn.’ because in my opinion the Yankees will wind us up this summer if something is not doen to fill up our army. But however the negro bill will cause a great many desertions for there is a great many think it would be putting us on a level with the negro...” VG.
