SHERIDAN, Philip (1831-1888) Union cavalry general who oversaw its maturation to an effective fighting force and played a major role in the final campaign leading to the surrender at Appomattox. Autograph Endorsement Signed “Gen. Pass-PH Sheridan” in pencil at bottom of an Autograph Letter Signed, “I. W. Kennedy” 1p. quarto, addressed to Major General Sheridan, it reads “Dr. Lippett will present you this note. He is my family physician & while differing with me in sentiment, is an honorable gentleman. He has several patients sick of Dyphtheria within our lines. Can you authorise him to visit them upon his Parole of Honor not to mention any thing he has seen in a Military Point of view. I think you can do so with perfect safety....” VG. With CDV of Sheridan.
