Manuscript Document Signed, "John C. Goodgame, Lt. Col. Comdg. 12th Ala." and additionally signed by "L. Gayle Adjt." 1p. oblong folio, being a list titled "12th Alabama Regiment Absent Commissioned Officers Accounted for and lists thirteen (13) officers by rank, how authorized for leave, date of authorization, cause of absence, and where they currently reside and whether or not they will return. The officers listed are Colonel S.B. Pickens who was 'Wounded'; Major Proskancer who was wounded; Surgeon George Whitfield, wounded; Chaplain H.D. Moore, wounded; 1st Lt. J.A. Williams, Prisoner of War; Captain F.C. Fischer, whose was authorized by the Secretary of War as 'Unfit for Field serv.'; 1st Lt. Karcher, 'Wounded'; 1st Lt. R.E. Park, Wounded & Prisoner; Captain Hewlett, Wounded & Prisoner; Capt J. J. Nicholson, 'Effects of Wound'; and 1st Lt. E.H. Jones, sick. Docketed on verso in pencil, "Confederate war orders taken from trenches at Petersburg, April 1865." Fine. John Chapman Goodgame (1835-1876) enlisted on June 17, 1861 and was promoted Lt. Col. on September 14, 1862. He is noted as being a heroic example at Petersburg were while under attack he "stoop atop a traverse shouting 'Alabamians! Stand up! Aim low and fire like men!' Soon , recalled a soldier of the 53rd North Carolina, 'the open space inside Fort Mahone was literally covered with blue-coated corpses.'
