HAYNE, Paul Hamilton (1830-1886) American poet born in Charleston, South Carolina, Hayne served in the Confederate Army, beginning in 1861, as staff aide to Governor Pickens and remained in the Army until his health failed. Hayne lost all his possessions when Charleston was bombarded. Autograph Letter Signed, “Paul Hayne” 2p. octavo, Columbia Co. Georgia, November 12, 1873, and reads “Of course, I take pleasure in complying with your request; and therefore, I write this note, enclosing a little poem, which let me hope, may prove satisfactory. May your charitable purpose be in every respect successfuly carried out...” VG.
