JONES, Samuel ( 1819 - 1887) Confederate Brigadier General who served as Beauregard's chief of artillery during First Bull Run. He headed the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida . A 4 pp. 8 vo.. ALS, Baltimore, Md. , Nov. 20, 1875, in part:"…I am sorry that I cannot give you any accurate information in regard to the composition of the command of Brig. Genl.. R.S. Garnett, where his command was organized, and where he was killed. I was so engrossed with my duties at Manassas [ where he was Chief of Artillery ] that I could know little of other commands. I am sure that the South lost one of its most gallant and accomplished officers when he fell…Nearly all of my war papers were destroyed or fell into the hands of the enemy after the surrender. I have, however, a copy of my official report of operations of troops during the time I presume is covered by your narrative, together with some reports of subordinate commanders & many telegrams during the same period, all of which is at your service…" Very good.
