DOUBLEDAY, Abner (1819-1893). Union general who fired the first shot against the Confederates at Fort Sumter, and led at Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, and Antietam. Partially Printed Document Signed, "Abner Doubleday" and his wife, "Mary Doubleday," in brown ink on October 5, 1852, Mortgage Indenture and Plan for a Plot of Land, Lot of two, Baltimore, MD, Choice Very Fine+. This large, 16.75" x 10.5" Indenture is completed in manuscript, for the sale of the Doubleday's property in Baltimore, 4-page folded document. The top of the document has a scalloped cut along the top of the paper. The property was sold to Henry Brackin for the sum of $600. This is a very formal written agreement with detailed information about the property and the transaction. The document is completely separated along the middle horizontal fold line and has various other small tears throughout the document. The reverse includes docketing information as well as various sum notations, but the signatures are not affected in the slightest. ...plus; Surveyor's plot of the property owned by Abner Doubleday and his wife is 16.5" x 13", with manuscript at the top, and a bird's-eye view of the land at the corner of Baltimore St. and McClellan Alley. This plot includes measurements of the property as well as measurements of buildings on the grounds. Also is a written description describing all pertinent detail about the property. On the reverse is docketing information and instructions. Signed at the bottom by the surveyor, Alexander J. Bouldin. There are a few tears along the middle fold line but still in Extremely Fine Condition. Abner Doubleday fired the first shot from Fort Sumter after the Confederate ironclad battery bombardment of the fort. He also led troops in the battle of Gettysburg and is credited with creating baseball. A great collection of documents from a man who did it all.(2 items)
