DAHLGREN, John (Adolphus Bernard) (1809-1870) Naval officer, inventor; His 11-inch Dahlgren smoothbore guns were carried aboard many U.S. warships, including the famous ironclad Monitor. As a rear admiral, he commanded the Union's South Atlantic Blockadina Squadron (1863--65) and was commandant of the Washington Navy Yard at his death. Autograph Letter Signed, “Jno. A. Dahlgren” 1p. quarto, Ordnance Office, U.S. Navy Yard, Washington, August 8, 1855, addressed to Messers Knap & Wade at the Fort Pitt Iron Works, and reads “Two VIII in Shell Gauges, (7.83x 7.87) were forwarded on the 6th instant by Express to your Foundry - I hope they may reach you safely...” Fine.
