An interesting war-date Pennsylvania civilian's letter, 2pp.4to., written in ink by Democrat William H. Peck, Troy, [Penn.], Aug. 20, 61 to a certain Mr. Hayden concerning an early anti-war/Republican sentiment that befell the country after the battle of First Bull Run, reading, in part: "…I received your letter…I did not know how to answer it for the reason that I had not consulted with our Democrats. Since I received yours…I find that public sentiment is undergoing a rapid change…1/2 of the taxpayers of this portion of the country are for peace. It is an everyday occurrence for us to hear prominent Republicans talk…against war & condemning the war policy of the administration. There are not a few who are in favor of withdrawing our force is from Virginia…& negotiating for Maryland and Washington, and there are many who…fear…our being able to save either. We are in a perilous situation, and if the Washington Government insists upon…imposing its policy much longer God only knows what we shall come to. Our three-month men are being disbanded and what is left are completely demoralized…enlistments are falling off in the entire county [and] is becoming disgusted with the imbecile head of War Department. I do not think we shall send delegates to Towanda…if there was a standing Committee to manage and control the calling of the Conventions then we could do something…let us hold a meeting of Democrats at Towanda during court, & appoint a Committee & organize & go to work…the time is coming and not far off when the Democrats again will become strong even in Bradford Co…". Also included is the original stamped transmittal envelope. Minor soiling, else very good.
