Autograph Letter Signed, “G.T Crozier” 2-1/2p. folio, United States Gunboat Paul Jones, St. Simons Sound, Georgia, November 22, 1862, and reads in part: “...When we first came down to Port Royal we were sent up to Port Royal ferry to dislodge some of the ‘Secesh’ and there we had our first tiral with them. We shelled them out from three different places and soon settled their ailment. After we returned to Port Royal we went up the Ogeechee river and had a fight with a battery called Fort James, but as there were obstructions in the river we could not get close enough to take it. The next engagement we had was at St. John’s Bluff, Florida. This bluff was strongly fortified and we were unsuccessful in our first attempt but in the second we succeeded in making them ‘skedaddle.’ The next and last fight we were in was up Broad river S.C. where we attempted to destroy a bridge called the Pocotaligo bridge, between Savannah and Charleston. We were defeated but the rebels themselves destroyed the bridge and so our object was gained after all...” More. VG.
