SUMNER, Edwin V. (1797-1863) U.S. Army officer who became a Major General and the oldest field commander of any Army Corps on either side during the American Civil War. His nickname "Bull Head" came from a legend that a musket ball once bounced off his head. Autograph Letter Signed, “E.V. Sumner Brig. Genl. U.S.A.” 1p. octavo, Washington, D.C., February 1, 1862, addressed to Ed Richards, and reads in part: “...I feel much honored by the invitation to be present at the annual meeting of the Suffolk Literary Institute. An unfortunate accident has confined me to the house for several weeks, and the moment I am able, I shall feel obliged to resume my duties in the field...” Fine.
