Union Soldier’s Letter 8 pp. 4to.,Charleston, Va., Kanashawa Valley, Nov. 2, 1862 “ …Day before yesterday we came very near surrounding Jenkin’s Cavalry. They were forced to swim the river and leave several horses and some were taken prisoner…When our men retreatedthey burnt some very important buildings that we occupied as Government Stores…You wished to know how the Rebels [ treated] us….they dealt with us better than we all expected at their hands…Kept us two nights and a day before they thought our stomachs needed food, then we had six days rations given us in the ten, and then half rations. …WHILE WE WERE PRISONERS WE SAW A COMPANY OF INDIANS THERE IN THEIR INDIAN STYLE DRESS. THEY SAY THEY ARE NNOW AT CUMBRELAND GAP… We got to see several of their prominent officers and soldiers from different southern states. The North Carolinians were the most ignorant of all, the Alabamians were a clever …set. There were at that place Georgians 40, 42 Regt. …the 11th regiment Tenn. Which took us prisoners, which was commanded by Col. Rains, 3rd. Regt. Tenn.Commanded by Col. Vaughn, the Regiment that had the most killed….in all 27 regiments of Rebels there and plenty more on the road to big Creek gap…we got off at 2killed , 4 wounded, & 54 taken prisoners…Our regiment washesoff and keeps their clothing clean and it is agreat deal towards the promotion of good health. We have a nice clear stream running right through the camp. We go to it every morning to wash by daylight. WE STILL HAVE THE SPY PRISONERS IN CAMP. John Yeagley went to town, stayed too hours too long, and got a little tight…He was court marshaled and was sentenced to six days fatigue duty. He was under my command. You need not say anything about it. Very good.
