Autograph Letter Signed by Charles Walbridge, Capt. 100th New York Vols later promoted to Lt Col., 4p. quarto, July 13, 1862, and reads in part: “...a man has just come in wounded in the arm; he shot himself accidently...the doctor thinks he will have to amputate...it seems to make me feel worse to see one man undergoing the torture of having his wound dressed than it does to go over a battlefield where hundreds are dead and dying...The Monitor ‘Galena’ and Stevens battery all lay out in the river, also several other gunboats and vessels among which is the Cumberland which you remember the Merrimac sunk after such a gallant fight at Newport News. She has been raised and razed and now is a fine looking steamer...” Fine.
