Autograph Letter Signed, “Dave Hunter” 2nd Lieutenant, 31st Indiana Infantry, 4p. octavo, pencil, McMinnville, Tennessee, August 16, 1862, on lettersheet featuring the “Desperate Bayonet Charge at Battle of WInchester, March 23, led by Gen. Tyler”, and reads in part: “...we marched at a rate of 22 miles a day...the gravel nearly ruined our feet for a great many were barefooted their shoes being entirely worn out for Uncle Sam does not furnish us hardly enough cloths but some of them will pull off their pants and go in their shirt tale at certian times. I suppose you heard that the Rebels had taken Galatin (Tenn.) burnt the Depot tore up 12 miles of the R.R. and taken 6 companies of the 28th K.Y. prisoners. That is just what I expected to hear of after we left there for the Kentuckians had never fired a gun since they had been in the service nor seen one armed Rebel, but had just been lying round towns guarding R.R. and twons and had never seen any hard times. If the old 31st had been there at that time there would have been several guns fired and some person hurt before it was all over; for I heard that the K.Y. never fired a gun but just gave up...” VG.
