Broadside, 29-1/2”x44”, being an advertising piece for the campaign of Harry Bumm, c. 1862-4, who attacks his opponent John Brodhead by using the closing of letter by Brodhead to Jefferson Davis. Issued in support of the candidacy of Harry Baum for City Treasurer (a name otherwise lost to posterity), it targets working class sensibilities and refers indirectly to the competition for jobs by free Black labor in the North. Using a common ploy of the times, it seeks to discredit the opposition candidate by dredging up earlier statements sympathetic to the South. Throughout the entire course of the War, Democratic office-seekers were continually confronted with charges of disloyalty to the Union. VG.
