Heimean, Kentucky, April 23, 1863, with cover addressed to a brother in Illinois, it reads in part: Ft. Hieman is on the west bank of the Tenn. river opposite Ft. Henry & 10 miles Ft. Donelson. We have two Co’s of the 3rd Minn. Vol. at Ft. Henry. I was over the other day the Ft. on the river side is pretty well battered down...there is one large cannon lying busted. The citizens say it killed 5 rebels besides wounding some when it bursted. The timber above the ft. still bears the marks of the conflict. We went over the other day & got the old rebel flag staff & it now stands in front of our Col. quarters it is made of pine nicely shaved it was struck by cannister shot & shattered a good deal. About one week ago a large expedition passed by here on its way to Florence, Ala, the rebels are reported storngly posted at that place...” More. About VG.
