A nice war-date Union soldier's, 4pp. 8vo., letter written in ink by Pvt. Albert J. Whitley, Co. C, 141st New York Vols., West Point, Va., May 8, 63to his sister concerning their drive upon Richmond while Hooker occupied Lee at Chancellorsville, reading, in part: "…this morning I find myself only thirty miles from Richmond…our Division is encamped 1 1/2 miles from West Point Landing in the direction of Richmond. The Skirmish at Suffolk last Sunday resulted in the Capture of two hundred Rebels & the hasty retreat of those that did not leave before that time…our Division came by railroad to Norfolk &…took passage on Steamboats to Fortress Monroe…we started for this place…after we had landed. The 40[th] Mass. deployed as skirmishers about 3/4 of mile from our camp…last night breastworks were thrown up the entire length of our battle line…we are protected by Gunboats which lay a short distance from our camp…we are now following in McClellan's old tracks…I hope that we will meet with better success than he did…". Whitley enlisted in August 1862 servicing in southern Virginia, in the Atlanta Campaign until he was wounded at Resaca, Ga. on May 15, 1864, and Sherman's March to the Sea. Before being discharged he was promoted to sergeant. Minor spotting, else very good.
