A wonderful war-date Union manuscript Special Order No. 2, 2pp. folio, document written in pencil by Major James Brady, "Hd. Qrs. Arty. 3rd Div. 1st A. C.", ca. Winter 1863 concerning the appointment of Bugler John P. Monismith, Battery B, 1st Penn. Light Artillery, as chief bugler, reading, in part: "… Bugler J. P. Minasmith, Baty. B, 1st Pa. Arty. is hereby announced as acting chief Bugler of this command…he will be obeyed & respected…[he] will assemble the buglers of the command for one hour instruction…immediately after morning drill…the orderly Bugler will be…detached sounding all the camp calls at the Regulation hours. All the Buglers of the command will assemble at the call for Assembly of Buglers…and will sound in their appropriate hours, reveille, retreat & tattoo. The following will be the numerical list of calls sounded…1 Ass. Buglers at sunrise…4 stable call Immediately after Reveille…8 Water call 9 A.M…21 Guard Mount imme. after Ret[reat]…25 Taps imme. after 8 1/2 P.M…". A true must for the collector of Civil War musical material as this document lists all twenty-five bugle calls, including their titles and times sounded, and is one of the first we have encountered in the marketplace. Monismith enlisted in 1861 and served throughout the war at the battles of Fredericksburg and Gettysburg, but died, within two months of becoming promoted sergeant in October 1864 Minor soiling, else very good.
