McArthur, John ( 1826 - 1906) Federal general who was wouned at Shiloh and shined in the Battle of Nashville. ALS. 3 pp.. 4to. While a divisional commander, McArthur writes to General McPherson, his direct superior and then in command of the 17th Corps, :"…I have just sent forward to Col. Hilyer to have the steamboats report to me at James Plantation, one mile below Carthage on Sunday at 12 M., when I will be ready to embark. We have built a bridge across the bayou at this place and constructed a road to the river …from whence we expect to go by boat to Grand Gulf …Gen. Blair has arrived with two Brigades going to the front, ….I cannot get the steamboats until he is ferried over, probably occupying till Tuesday next….I intend to take up the two bridges across the bayou between here and Perkin's Landing., using the flat boat to transport my baggage to the Gulf…My sick I send to the hospital at James Plantation, whether I will send all the stragglers and other debris of the camps from this time forth, should anything in the above program not meet your views please inform me by bearer and I will act accordingly. I am extremely anxious to get to the front and will do everything I can to get that end…" Very good.
