FISK, Clinton ( 1828 - 1890) Union General who founded Fisk University. In a 1p. 4to. ALS written on stationary bearing the header: "Headquarters, 2nd. Brigade, 13th Division, 13th Army Corps" , Fisk writes from the "Stuart Rose, Mouth of the Yazoo Pass, March 2, 1863", submitting a partially humorous report to his superiors of his progress in moving a "Floating Column" of gunboats . In part:"…The left of your floating column is now at a :'Parade Rest' in the Coldwater. The Emma has been brought through the 'Pass'. She has been a deal of trouble. We have taken down, cut there from [ the chimneys ] 10 feet …patched her boilers, rebuilt one [ paddle ] wheel, cut her way through the Wilderness and pushed her rattling, cracking, crashing, smashing, thundering through the woods and cane brakes, until she now floats in the Coldwater…To the prompt , cheerful and ernest cooperation of Captain Geo. W. Browne, the efficient commander of the gun boat :"Forest Rose" we are much indebted for this success. I shall henceforth be at my headquarters on the Steamer "Lebanon No. 2" …" Near fine.
