Union Soldier's letter 2pp. 4to., Rappahannock ,Va. ,August 30, 1863 in which 'James 'writes to his sweetheart Emily, about witnessing the simultaneous execution of five men, in part:'…Yesterday I witnessed perhaps a scene that you would not EVER look at. After I had got my dinner out of the way I walked two miles and there I saw five ( 5) deserters shot all at one time. I tell you it was a solemn sight to see five men sit upon their coffins and be shot down. They were all blinded. They fell as if they did not know what hit them. Only one of them struggled. I had a good view of them from the time they came out of the prison until they were buried. I did not go to see them because I wished to see men shot, but I wished to see the form and know how men could act that would desert in time of our countries need and then sell themselves for a pittance…" Minor foxing at folds, very good.
