ALS, Rappahanock Station, Va., August 3, 1863 :”A.K. is at the Convalescent Camp near Alexandria…He found that we were at the front where there was some chance for a little Music so he stopped where all cowards do. The day that we got here, Buford’s Cavalry was just crossing the river . Around them was the 9th N.Y. cavalry …two batteries went over with them. They reconnoitered towards Culpepper and where about two miles out they encountered a force of Reb Cavalry which fell back and were speedily reinforced by mounted infantry and artillery. They ( the rebs) then coming up in solid columns. Our Columns of cavalry moved up on a charge at a run but were not strong enough to hold our position and had to fall back. I have seen a number of our cavalry boys…The boys say they never have had as hard a fighting since they have been out in service. Old company B of the Excelsior Brig. Are only a few miles from here…” VG.
