There is a very large army here perhaps 40,000 men, troops are landing nearly all of the time Suffolk has been evacuated so that all the troops in Dix's department that could be spared might assist in the Capture of Richmond…General Foster from North Car[olina] is advancing up the James River…Charles Potts is here he is a carpenter on the Steam boat. The army…is encamped on the Plantation of the Brigadier General Lee. The clearing is one mile in width by two in length, there is 10,000 acres in the whole farm…it is no wonder that people fear the draft, it is a bad thing to be a drafted soldier, there is a Regt. of them here…".
