Autograph Letter Signed, “E. L. Hyland” (1843-1919) 32nd Massachusetts Infantry, 2p. quarto, pencil, Camp Dana, Philadelphia, September 2, 1863, and reads in part: “...We had a little excitement a few nights ago. Some of our boys was attacked by some citiznes about 1/2 mile from camp. One soldier was shot the rest came to camp and got a Lieutenant and some men and went back to a house where the citizens wneth. They shot one of the Copperheads, he was buried yesterday. Our boys captured 5 citizens and a lot of pistols sabres and shot guns. The Citizens was placed in close confinement...I suppose you saw in the paper about 5 deserters being shot in the 118 Pa Regt. They was in the same divsion with my Regt. I heard that the 32 shot them...” VG.
