A good war-date Union soldier's, 4pp. 8vo., letter written in ink by Pvt. Albert J. Whitley, Co. C, 141st New York Vols., Lookout Valley, Tenn., Dec. 5, 63to his sister concerning witnessing the battle of Chattanooga, reading, in part: "…on] Nov 22nd the 11th Corps left camp in light marching order…I being unwell…was left in camp in company with six others of our Company. General Sherman's Army…engaged Bragg's Army by skirmishing [on] the 23d & on the 24th General Hooker with part of the 14th Corps & one Division of the 12th Corps drove in the Reb pickets at 10am. He occupied the same ground the Eleventh Corps did on the night of Oct 28 which is opposite Lookout Point…I saw the most of the battle. After a sharp fight, of an hours duration, he whipped the Rebs…took 1,500 Prisoners & gained possession of the mountain. [On] the 25th Sherman brought on a General engagement near Missionary Ridge…the roar of Cannon was awful, & the Musketry firing was very heavy…our men carried every point…captured 10,000 Prisoners & sixty pieces of Artillery. The 2d Division of our Corps was in the fight…Lieut. Stewart's Photograph will come…by mail, please fix it on the Soldiers Record, & when I can I will get the Captain's & Lt. McMillan's. The war is soon ended unless the Rebels do better…the late battle has nearly used them up…". Whitley enlisted in August 1862 servicing in southern Virginia, in the Atlanta Campaign until he was wounded at Resaca, Ga. on May 15, 1864, and Sherman's March to the Sea. Before being discharged he was promoted to sergeant. Some spotting, else very good.
