A truly historic war-date manuscript Union document, 1p. folio, issued by the Army of the Potomac's Chief of Staff Daniel Butterfield "Received at 11:20 a. m. by Telegram from Head quarters Army of the Potomac, June 22, 1863" to 1st Corps commander Major General ,John Reynolds announcing Pleasanton's cavalry over Stuart at the battle of Upperville on June 21, 1863, reading, in part: "… General Pleasanton reports he attacked the enemy's cavalry under Stuart yesterday. He was assisted by [Col. Strong Vincent's brigade of] Barnes Division of the 5th Corps [and] drove him steadily…through Upperville and Ashby's Gap, inflicting heavy loss upon them at every step, captured at large number of small arms, sabers…two (2) pieces of artillery, one a Blakely Gun, three caissons, exploded one, a number of Prisoners and a large number of wounded left in Upperville. [The] enemy left dead and wounded on the field. Our loss [was] small. A disastrous day to the Rebel Cavalry, many charges made and the sabre used freely with great advantage to us. Please inform the Commanders in your vicinity…and let it be known to the troops…". In a two-prong attack, Pleasanton did exactly what was declared in this telegram with the exception that it is recorded that he captured only one cannon and 250 prisoners. The events at Upperville served to only slow Lee's advance towards Pennsylvania momentarily and in a little over a week the two armies would clash at Gettysburg and General Reynolds would be killed. Minor soiling, else very good.
