Last Thursday we landed at the foot of South Mountain…our forces had [?] big fight at the gap Friday. We layed side of the old Antietam battle ground. Saturday we came through Boonesboro. The people welcome us. We came past the ground where our cavalry had a brush with the Johneys…our Corps was in line of battle all day yesterday. We are all advancing this morning…it won't be long before we have a fight with old Lee. There was some heavy firing on the right of us yesterday. The report is that another thousand prisoners was taken…if I am called onto fight I will try and do my duty…and put my trust in the God of battle…[Jan. 8, 64]…a great many of the army has enlisted in the Veteran Corps about sixty of the 12th New York Battery…we have some new recruits but no raw ones we take them from out of the [?] regiment it would not do to get raw ones now in the field…we have laid still since we had a brush with the enemy up in the Wilderness…we will have an early spring campaign…". Two of the original stamped transmittal covers are included. Overall very good.
