Autograph Letter Signed, “E. L. Hyland” (1843-1919) 32nd Massachusetts Infantry, 4-1./2p. octavo, December 13, and reads in part: “...the 5th Corps and 1 Div of the 2nd Corps started on a forced march they marched so far and fast taht the road was filled with officers and men that couldn’t keep up most of them that kept up throwed away all their things. The road was filled with all kinds of things...we didnt stop until we got Gen Meade’s Head Qrs. about 20 miles. There was about 3000 of us some guerillas came up in the rear and captured about 300 of us, they didnt show any mercy. They killed one fellow and cut him in quarters and hung him up in a tree by a court house for our fellows to look at. Another they pinned to the ground with a bayonet. Another squad of Rebs got in ahead of us and captured about 30 that was a litle ahead of the reast...” More. VG.
