Autograph Letter Signed, “Nathan Augustus”, 120th New York Infantry, WIA at Gettysburg, 1p. folio, 3d Corp Hospital near Gettsyburg, July 12, 1863, with cover addressed to a friend in New York, with Gettysburg postmark, reads in most part:” ...I received your letter when we was at Centerville on our way to Maryland a following up the rebels...we left camp at Falmouth the 8th day of June and started for Maryland. We had some hard days march it was very warm and the boys were very tired...my feet was very sore. The day that we crossed the Potomac River we crossed at Edwards Ferry on the Pontoon Bridges and there I saw Henry Skutt the 20th Regt was there...we marched 29 miles...we came in to Pennsylvania and there we found the rebs and we marched into camp the 1st of July and the next day we went in to the battle and we had a hard time of it. Our Captain AG Barker he was shot dead and William Holenbeck he was shot dead of Oak Hill. Alexander Layman he was shot through the side and in the left leg bad too. I was shot in the right leg I am getting along first rate. They are a moving them off as fast as they [can] to Baltimore and Philadelphia and New York...we lost in our regiment 200 and 5 killed and wounded. 100 killed 105 wounded 8 officers killed and 6 wounded. The 20 regt was all cut up too but we whipped them and took 15 thousand prisoners, killed and wounded 17 thousand...” Fine. At Gettysburg-in Humphrey's division-the 120th New York became involved in the disaster of the second day's battle, but like the rest of the 3d corps, it fell back in good order to the second line, fighting as it went.
