F, 13 N.H.V.” 2p. octavo, Petersburg, July 3, 1864, and reads in most part: “...According to agreement I proceed to give you the particulars of your Brothers captured. Kantz with Wilsons Division of Cavalry started on a raid and after being out some 6 or 7 days we made an attack on Roanoke Bridge and it was there where your Brother was wounded and he was taken in my ambulance and the expdiditon was returning to camp and got as far as the Petersburg & Richmond RR...when we were attacked again by a much larger force than we had and they drove us back with a considerable loss on our side. We had to unharnass our horses and mount them and get out the best way we could. We just made out to get away and that was all. Your brothers wound was not of a serious nature, he was wounded in the face. I think the ball came out just back of the ear & it affected his should...it was too bad to let a wounded man fall into their hands but we couldnt help it...” VG.
