September 7, 1864, "Bounty" Receipt for Four Union Volunteers, New York, Choice Very Fine. 8" x 5.5", doublesided page. Verso has a canceled, pale blue 2¢ Internal Revenue stamp. Recto is signed by "S.F. Bowen," Captain and Provost Marshall of the 29th District of New York, who writes: "I hereby certify that Robert Anderson, Henry Coban, Benjamin Carl & Charles Emmery were this day mustered into the military service of the United States for the period of three years and credited to the town of Byron, Genesee County and were paid bounties as per agreement with said Recruits." $1,600 was committed to pay the four soldiers. Document is toned and soiled along center crease. Writing is nevertheless quite legible.
