Autograph Letter, 4p. quarto, Orleans, Indiana, February 20, 1864, and reads in part: “...You know that I was always a great hand to dabble in the dirty pool of politics. It is principally because I love the excitement of a campaign. But it wont pay! I think of going to Indianapolis tomorrow to help make a Governor. Everyone seems to favor a nomination of Morton. He is the very man for the position; Gen. Gusham to the contrary notwithstanding. His election is sure. I should like to see Father May nominated for Supt. of Public Instruction but he isnt a wise worker so he will stand no chance. The great Emancipation Convention at Louisville comes off tomorrow. I suppose the delegates may consider themselves fortunate if they escape Prentices Lamp Post. Prentice is a very funny man, but the funniest thing in regard to him is that he cant see the drift of political ideas in this country. You had as well undertake to dam up the Nile with bulrushes as to fetter the step of Freedom in the United States. Kentucky will [be] the last in the Union to abolish the nefarious practice...” More.
