Partly-printed war-date D. S. "Frederick Hoffman" as color guard of the 149th Pennsylvania (Bucktails) Vols., 1p. large folio, [n. p.], Mar. 31, 1864 being a clothing return account for company C of his hard-fought Gettysburg regiment in which Pvt. Hoffman acknowledges the receipt of clothing and accoutrements worn out during the campaigns of 1863. Hoffman's Gettysburg story is fascinating in that the unit's commander ordered the regiment's colors to be moved to a forward position in order to conceal the true position of the regiment. Six members of the color guard, including Hoffman, moved forward incredibly convincing the Confederate high command that there was a Union regiment beneath the flags. The ruse worked, but eventually the little command was overwhelmed, and the regimental banner captured. Also, included are photocopies of the role Hoffman played on that faithful day at Gettysburg. Some spotting with archival repair to the folds, else very good.
