A nice war-date Union soldier's, 4pp. 8vo., letter written in ink by Pvt. Albert J. Whitley, Co. C, 141st New York Vols., "Camp on the field, 4 miles north of the Rome railroad, & ten miles South West of Dalton, Ga., May 12, 64" to his sister concerning their fighting and of being in good spirits days before being wounded at the battle of Resaca, reading, in part: "…I can…give you a brief account of our travels for the last six days. The main Rebel army is eight miles from where we now are. The 15th, 16th and 20th Corps are here on this side of Dalton. A large battle is soon to be fought, the 2d Division, 20th Corps was in a fight last Sunday & lost five 100 (five hundred) killed & wounded…the troops were under comd of General Geary, & were charging a rough & lofty mountain ridge called Buzzards roost…42 Rebs. were marched by here last night. Kilpatrick is in our front now & doing good service…the 107[th] NYV is in the 2d Brigade of our Division. I saw Henry Carpenter…he is a ruged…soldier…Co. C & Co. K of the 141st are doing duty on a mountain in the rear where we now lay…the 5th Conn., 123 NY, 46 Pa, 141st NY are the Regts. composing our Brigade…the place where we now lay is in the woods…between two mountains that nearly touch each other…I am as healthy & cheerful as ever since I enlisted…our Generals have planned out for the destruction of the Rebel army in Ga…". Whitley enlisted in August 1862 servicing in southern Virginia, in the Atlanta Campaign until he was wounded at Resaca, Ga. on May 15, 1864, and Sherman's March to the Sea. Before being discharged he was promoted to sergeant. Some soiling, else very good.
