VAN BUREN, James Lyman (1837-1866) Member of General Burnside’s staff, and served with credit, in General Grant's campaign against Richmond, receiving the brevet of lieutenant-colonel for his bravery, and subsequently that of colonel for his services in the Knoxville campaign. In the assault on the works at Petersburg he gained the brevet rank of brigadier-general. Autograph Letter Signed, “J. L. Van Buren” 3p. octavo, Hd. Qrs. February 26, 1865, addressed to Captain Larned, and reads in part: “...I hardly know whether I am a Bvt. B.G. or not, having rec’d no official notification & my only information being the newspapers who sometimes make mistakes. I was exceedingly surprised to see my name among the list of confirmations not having the least idea such a thing was in contemplation. I shall write to the Genl. in a day or two. We were speaking of you just now in Loring’s tent, wondering why you did not get a break, all agreeing that you deserved one as much as any of us. I will cordially unite in any plan of testifying our regard for the Genl. but think a later time would be better than this - say when we finally seperate. In this opinion Loring agrees with me. Nothing new here. Genl. Parke is in command of the army, Meade being away on account of the death of his son. Willcox off on leave & Potter commanding the Corps. We expect to be in Petersburg in a few days - more or less - believing the Rebs will evacuate...” VG.
