EMORY, William Hemsley (1811-1887) Union general who distinguished himself during the Red River expedition, especially at Sabine Cross-Roads, at Pleasant Hill, and at Cane River.A fascinating and important 1p.8vo. ALS marked "confidential" , Cumberland Sept. 21, ( 1865) in which Union General Emory writes to a Colonel Taylor with intelligence concerning the Oct.3, 1864 death of Lt. John R. Meigs, son of General Montgomery Meigs, in part:"…Detective Brown has returned from the mountains and he has learned…that Lt. Meigs was killed by one Brennan, an Alabamian, in Rosser's command. I mark this confidential because I have given you the name of the Detective, who is known as such except at these Hd. Qt.s…." There had been much controversy concerning the nature of Lt. Meig's death, which occurred when he confronted three Confederate scouts on horseback. Opinions were divided at the time as to whether he had died in a fair fight , or been killed in cold blood trying to surrender. Though General Meigs obviously believed his son was murdered, much of the later evidence indicated that he had died in a fair fight. Very good .
