MEADE, George G. (1815-1872). General who led the Union Army to victory at Gettysburg, probably the most important battle in U.S. history. The loss of that battle would have meant the loss of the Civil War. Autograph Letter Signed, “Geo. G. Meade Maj. Genl.” 1p. octavo, Hd Qrs. A.V., May 18, 1865, and reads in part: “...I was very glad to learn that Capt [?] had een sent by Lt. Genl. Grant ...and was very sorry when in Philad. on the 14th inst. that my public duties prevented my remaining to attend the funeral ceremonies. I trust now that all is over, and that he rests quietly...” Mounted to biography sheet, else about VG.
