A rare post-war archive of four document's related to the claim of the widow of Pvt. Ephraim Churchill who died at the Confederacy's most infamous prison-Andersonville. A partly-printed document, entitled: Widows' Claim for Arrears of Pay, Bounty Money, 1p. folio, Decatur, Tenn., Oct. 15, 1866, reading, in part: "…Ephraim L Churchill…a private in…the 13th regiment of Tennessee Cavalry…commanded by Colonel Bradford in the War with the so-called Confederate States…enlisted at Paducah, Ky…and died at the Rebel Prison in Andersonville on…the 18th day of August 1864…the cause of death was Diarrhea & scurvy which he contracted while in the service of the United States…she claims there is due her by reason of the service of her said husband…three months extra pay allowed to prisoners of war and commutation of clothing & rations…" PLUS; a printed 1p. 4to., Treasury Department, Washington, Oct. 6, 1873, reading, in part: "…on the 3rd day of may, 1861, the President issued his proclamation calling for forty-two thousand and thirty-four volunteers for three years…promising a bony of one hundred dollars…the promise was only made to the volunteers called for in the President's proclamation…all volunteers who enlisted for three years prior to July 22, 1861…are entitled to one hundred dollars bounty…" PLUS; two copies of his 1847 marriage certificate. Apparently, saved from a fire with the margins of each document charred, else very good.
