Partly-printed Document Signed, “Richard Gomar” 1p. folio, Calhoun, Michigan, September 6, 1866, and reads in part: “Richard Gomar of Albion in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan...who was a private of Company H commanded by Captain Charles Lucken in the 54 Regiment of Mass Volunteers...enlisted or volunteered in the service of the United States, at Battle Creek, Mich...for the term of three years, and was discharged at Gallops Island, Boston Harbor...” VG. Accompanied by soliders record and xerox of image of Gomar from book. The famous Mass 54th was commanded by Robert Gould Shaw and was composed primarily of free colored men, who had enlisted at the urging of Frederick Douglass amongst other recruiters. They were the most prominent of all colored units and were immortalized in the film “Glory.”
