A truly historic post-war A. L. S. "Jos. R. Hawley" as a United States senator, on United States Senate letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, D. C., Jan. 10, 1887, to Connecticut State Comptroller Thomas Clark recommending a black veteran to a state house post, reading, in part: "…Charles H. Thomas of Hartford a colored man whom I have known since his service in the war is very anxious to get employment in the State House. I have requested my partner S. A. Hubbard to consult you about it…Mr. Thomas has always been a worthy citizen and faithful republican, but some of the colored men of Hartford protested against favoring him…Mayor Buckley…and Mr. McGovern (chairman of the Town Committee) knows him…". HAWLEY, JOSEPH R. (1826-1905) Union brevet brigadier general who became Connecticut's governor in 1866 and served in the US senate from 1881 until his death in 1905. Most likely, Hawley is referring to Pvt. Charles H. Thomas, Co. E, 41st U. S. C. T. whose regiment served under Hawley in 1864. Near fine.
