Elusive ambotype image of Union Colonel Elmer Ellsworth. Measures 2 3/4” X 3 3/4” and is in fine condition having some minor nicks at the left field and bottom, overall a fine image with Ellsworth’s image being bold and clear. Ellsworth was a Colonel in the New York Zouaves, and was killed on May 24th, 1861 at the Marshall House Inn in Alexandria, Virginia. Ellsworth is said to be the first Union Soldier killed in the Civil War. He was also a close friend of President Abraham Lincoln, who was grief stricken over the death of Ellsworth.
