An unusual war dated Union CDV that due to the circumstances that led to its being made is extremely scarce. During the War years, a number of CDVs were published by Brady showing a picture of Abraham Lincoln surrounded by pictures of his prominent military leaders, bearing captions such as:"Our Present Peace Commissioners." In this unusual CDV, which seems to be made from a pirated copy of either a Brady or Anthony original, the image of Andrew Johnson as president is located in the center position formerly reserved for Lincoln, meaning that the CDV could only have been published After Lee's surrender on the 9th of April and Lincoln's assassination on April 15. Of 1865. This image could only have had any relevance in the brief period between Lincoln' assassination and the surrender of the remaining significant Southern Armies in the following few weeks. The relevance of this image must have been even briefer after taking into consideration the time required to make, publish and distribute the image. At the War's end, there would be no incentive to purchase such an image, especially as Johnson's popularity rapidly waned. Very good.
