c. 1900, 69th Ohio Veteran Honorary Tiffany Medal, Gem Mint. Presented to Charles E. Hamilton, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. On the front, a Figure of Liberty, flanked by eagle and sheaf of wheat, crowns a soldier with laurel. Reverse inscription, "THE/ STATE OF OHIO/ TO/ CS. E. HAMILTON (engraved)/ VETERAN/ CO. The 69th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was organized in Feb. 1862 and took the field in Tennessee in April, guarding railroads most of the time until the Battle of Stone River in December, when it took an active part in that engagement. On January 2, 1863 it charged the enemy and captured a section of artillery. It operated in Tennessee until September 1863, when it performed valuable service at Chickamauga. The regiment fought at Mission Ridge with severe loss, and in March 1864 reenlisted and went to Ohio. It joined Sherman's Atlanta campaign in May and engaged the enemy at Resaca, Pumpkin Vine Creek, Dallas, Kenesaw, Atlanta and Jonesboro. It then pursued Hood north, returned to Atlanta, marched to the sea and through the Carolinas, then on to Richmond and Washington City. After the Grand Review it proceeded to Louisville and was mustered out July 17, 1865.
