An interesting and important 2pp. small 4to. A.L.S. Fort Knox, August 23, 1795, addressed to Major John Mills, Adjutant General to the United State's Army at Greenville ( At the time serving as headquarters for General Anthony Wayne's Army), in part:"….Baradon arrived yesterday from Lanslagrass. He brings accounts of the Spaniards advancing their posts into our Territory. They have lately built one of Cannonproof at the Chickasaw Bluff and garrisoned it with 700 men and are immediately to build another higher up the river, within 15 miles of the Ohio where Genl. Clark once built a fort. It is hard to conjecture what will be the consequences, whither our Government will tamely put up with it and endeavor to remove it by negotiation or whether it will be business for our Armey after the pending Treaty----They have had a tremendous fire lately in New Orleans which blew up their magazine, killed 300 people, and burned half the town …" The matter was temporarily resolved without the use of force, for on October 27th of 1795, American envoys signed the Treaty of San Lorenzo with Spain , establishing the Western and Southern boundaries of the territories belonging to the United States and Spain. This letter comes with a full transcription and is in near fine condition.
