GARLAND, John (1792-1861) Served in the War of 1812 rose to Lt. Col and was honored for his distinction in the Florida War under Gen. Worth, and served through the Mexican war, distinguishing himself six times and commanding a brigade at Monterey and through Gen. Scott’s subsequent campaign. Autograph Letter Signed, “J. Garland” 1p. quarto, Washington City, February 17, 1836, and reads in part: “...I directed, I believe a discontinuance of the Literary Messenger. I have concluded however to take it again, from the first number of the 2nd Volume...” VG.
