Autograph Letter Signed, 8p. octavo written on “ON Active Service with the U.S. Naval Forces Operating in European Waters” c. 1918, and reads in part: “...It seems to be my fate taht now at last when I am in France the war is suddenly called off. The Huns of Berlin must have known that hte eight division was about to embark...Landed in France sometime before the armistice and during last great drives. Came over on one of the largest and probably fastest at the same time most sought after by the hun vessels...Crossed in six days. Are stationed now within the wall of an old French fortress or I should say walls and moats. Names of course I cannot mention...I witnessed a celebration by the people of a French city upon the occassion of the Armistice. Of course the French do not display or otherwise celebrate until definite victory when it all comes out at once. They receive a communication published in the public square in which all Frenchmen are asked to display the flags of the Allies and thereafter rejoice...” Much more. VG.
