A book of Nazi Propaganda 80pages quarto Berlin, 1940, entitled:”The Book of the Great Trek”. This is one of a number of books published to encourage native Germans or Ethnic Germans living outside of Germany to travel east and take possession of the newly acquired lands in German Occupied Poland and later, parts of Russia as well. In some ways the migrants are much like America’s early settlers of the West. The group prepares to leave by forming into a wagon train, one wagon per family, and following a chosen SS officer as their guide and leader. The goal was to populate this newly captured territory or “Lebensraum” with Germans so as to bind the land more strongly to the fatherland. Much of the previous population had been forcibly evacuated, and in theory all the willing migrants had to do was to move in and take over farms with land already in production that had been forcibly evacuated. The book may have had an effect quite the opposite of its intended purpose, for it makes migrating eastward look challenging for the most hardy of individuals. Very good.
