GRISSOM, Virgil "Gus" ( 1926-1967) American astronaut who perished during testing for the first Apollo flight. A scarce check from the National Bank of Sam Houston at San Antonio with a rubber stamp authorizing payment to the order of :"Langley Exchange", with the amount of the check, date of September 8, 1959, and his signature with rank,: "Virgil J. Grissom , Capt. 22450A" written out by him. In the bottom left hand corner of the check Grissom has written in block letters:" NASA ST 6, PA 33325,- EX 205". It is interesting to note that in the year that this check was written Grissom was chosen to be one of America's first seven astronauts. A green line from the ink cancellation on the verso has bled through , touching the top of Grissom's middle initial and Last name. Grissom's first name is also touched by dots from the punch cancel reading :"paid" with little, if any noticeable effect. Even though the signature is easily read, Because of the :"bleedthrough" from the verso and the punch cancellation, we have chosen to be conservative and rate the check as being in :"Good" condition.
