Here is the absolutely original business card of that famous Jewish-American attorney, philanthropist and founder of noted college. Apprenticed / indentured for two years in 1837 (at age 16) to a watchmaker he continued circa 1839 to 1848 at that work and in the jewelry business in Phila. This 2 ½ x 3 ½ business card will date to those years. Bold multi-style printing announcing: “MOSES A. DROPSIE, CLOCK AND WATCH MAKER, AND MANUFACTURER OF JEWELLERY [sic] AND SILVER WARE… 57 NORTH THIRD STREET [PHILA]. HAS CONSTANTLY FOR SALE WATCHES, GOLD PLATED AND GILT JEWELLERY, SILVER AND PLATED WARE, WATCH MAKERS’ TOOLS AND WATCH MATERIALS…” (etc.); Phila. printer signature lower corner. Normal aging; light wear, but exc. A unique authentic relic of a rags-to-riches career. Accompanied by three fine bio sketches from both “Dictionary of American Biography” and Encyclopedia’s of Jewish Biography

Few recall (and mention is rare) the fact that “MOSES AARON DROPSIE” had such humble beginnings as a watchmaker and jeweler in Phila.
