Neatly penned single page suggested wording for an advertisement (to be placed in the “Occident”) by the Secretary of Congregation Shanarai-Chasset (“Gates of Mercy”). Although undated is circa 1840’s or at latest, early 1850’s; especially note the early and varied spelling of the congregation’s name. Written in the hand of, and fully signed by M. Kalisher, Sec’y of the Board: “THE HEBREW CONG. SHANGARAI [sic] CHASSED [sic] AT NEW ORLEANS DESIRE TO OBTAIN SERVICES OF A MINISTER COMPETENT TO DELIVER LECTURES IN GERMAN AND ENGLISH. HE IS ALSO EXPECTED TO INSTRUCT CHILDREN IN HEBREW AND IN ALL MATTERS CONNECTED WITH OUR RELIGION. Salary fixed at $1,500 per annum besides other revenues. The Cong. would prefer the candidates present themselves for consideration at their own expenses by reading and lecturing before them. …Testimonials, etc. must be addressed to L. Klopmann, President,…By order of the Board.” Just the edges of side and bottom margins tattered and nicked (a bit ragged), but no wording damaged and all intact
